When in Mexico Clerkenwell…

Dog friendly restaurant review: Breddos Tacos

If you prefer your tacos ‘rough and ready’, Sonora Taqueria might be more your style…

But if you’re looking for a sit-down Mexican meal with both style and substance, this dog friendly restaurant should be on your radar. Although this small Mexican restaurant looks unsuspecting from the outside, the grub here really packs a punch.

Environment

Located in Clerkenwell, the closest station to Breddos Tacos is Barbican. However, you can also reach it from Farringdon station or Old Street station if you’re up for walking an extra five minutes or so. Look out for an all-black restaurant with blacked out windows and ‘mezcal’ and ‘tacos’ written in bright bubble writing. A subtle hint at the cool decor you’ll find behind the curtain inside.

Breddos Tacos is small. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in style. With an open kitchen and art across the walls, they don’t shy away from sound or colour here. Or from each other, for that matter, since most of the seating is shared. This gives the venue a warm, vibrant and welcoming feel. That said, you can also opt for more of an intimate experience by sitting at one of the booths. Either way, it’s worth noting that the venue is pretty snug, so I’d keep that in mind if you have a larger or more reactive dog.

Price

The appetisers and the tacos average at around £8 each, while the mains range from £7 to £18. Just to note, the tacos come in pairs, so this works out to around £4 per taco. The fact they come in pairs is great for sharing, so I’d recommend trying a few different ones. It’s safe to say that Breddos Tacos isn’t cheap, but the quality of food they serve here is worth the extra cost. Their tortillas are made in house using corn that’s ground daily with a volcanic stone mill. They also source all of their meat and fish from two trusted suppliers. If you’re worried that it’s going to be a little too spenny, check this out.

*HACK* Breddos Tacos is often featured on First Tables. This is an app that offers 50% off food at selected restaurants if you book one of their first or last tables of the day. Unlike Tastecard, this app works with independents, not chains, so it’s a great way to try new restaurants in your area. It’s definitely worth looking into.

Taste

The food here is next level. The dishes are simple, colourful and definitely hands on. As I mentioned earlier, Breddos Tacos prides itself on using the best ingredients and the chefs here really let those ingredients shine through. In addition to the house menu, there are normally a few specials on the blackboard, so keep an eye out for these. The stand out dishes for me are the Tuna Tostada, the Puebla Style Arabes Tacos and the Masa Fried Chicken. The only thing that makes me sad about Breddos Tacos is their lack of desserts. Sometimes, they have Happy Endings ice cream sandwiches available, which are absolutely delicious.

Service

But enough about the food. What about our furry friends? Breddos Tacos is happy to welcome your dog. In fact, the staff love it. Unfortunately, the size of the venue is likely to prove tricky for larger or more reactive canines. However, if you request a booth, your dog can rest underneath the table and will be undisturbed by people walking by.

So, what’s the PETS (Price, Environment, Taste and Service) rating for Breddos Tacos?

  • Price: 3.7/5
  • Environment: 4.1/5
  • Taste: 4.5/5
  • Service: 4.3/5

Overall, this dog friendly restaurant scores 4.2 out of 5. This would be higher if the price was more affordable and if the venue wasn’t as snug. But without a doubt, this is one of my favourite Mexican restaurants in London.

Next time you fancy a mouth-watering Mexican feast, you should ‘taco’ chance on Breddos Tacos.
